Nigerian wildlife regions and all its unique Animals
Nigerdelta
The Nigerdelta is full of life and brings a wide variety of wildlife to Nigeria. The Nigerdelta is home to the hippo but also crocodiles, different species of monkeys and even African elephants.
Loss of natural habitat
Unfortunately is the Nigerdelta experiencing habitat destruction. There is habitat destruction Since the discovery of oil in the 1950’s, the discovery brought socioeconomic activities to the region which in term supported a larger human population endangering animal habitat. The human population is rapidly growing creating further risk of habitat loss. Exploitation of natural recources such as timber and fish also pose a risk to the eco system of the Nigerdelta.
savannah
Northern regions of Nigeria are characterized by a savannah. The savannah is home to numerous of big mammals such as the African elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, African buffaloes, antelopes and warthogs. Unfortunately are there almost no giraffes left in Nigeria because of habitat loss and the killing of giraffes for bushmeat markets. However there are giraffes right on the border with Chad, Cameroon and Niger which do cross the border sometimes. Besides this is a small group of about 30 giraffes living in the Sumu Wildlife Park in Nigeria.
Cross River Gorilla
There are 75-110 Cross River Gorillas living in Nigeria, they are located right on the border between Nigeria and Cameroon.
This species of gorillas has gradually declined in numbers because of habitat loss and being hunted for bushmeat. The population declined 59% between 1995 and 2010 which is the greatest decline in population of all subspieces of great apes in that period.
